Malaria in the WHO region of Americas
Description
In 1955, Mexico, with the most severe malaria problem in the Western Hemisphere - over 63% of the malaria remaining in the Hemisphere was found in this country - decided to attack the disease on a military basis and to make war on malaria. Because of the immense area to be covered, logistics and strategy on a war-like scale were called for if Mexico was to achieve its objective of complete eradication of the disease from its borders. Eight General Staff officers were assigned to collaborate with sanitary engineers and malariologists in a geographic reconnaissance of the country and to organize the campaign which called for extending DDT spraying to some three million homes. The World Health Organization, active in assisting many countries to organize a world-wide war on malaria, assigned three technical consultants to work with the Mexican Government's Commission for the Eradication of Malaria.
These vehicles, furnished by UNICEF, have been assigned to Zone II Headquarters of the Commission for the Eradication of Malaria, located at Villahermosa, State of Tabasco. Good roads are at minimum in this tropical area and vehicles therefore require good maintenance.
