Schistosomiasis in the WHO region of the Americas
Description
During the mid-fifties, a vigorous control campaign was carried out in Brazil because of the 4th million people affected by schistosomiasis. Several centres were leading research on the biology, ecology and classification of snails. Field experiments tested the effectiveness of application of molluscicide. An intensive health education programme was directed not only to school-children but also to adults.
At the schistosomiasis clinic in Varjao, health educator S. Tinoco Marquez de Azevedo explains posters to patients waiting for treatment.
