Description
Anatomy of a project
Ethiopia 9 is the prosaic name of a scheme to overcome in Ethiopia what is no doubt the greatest obstacle to health progress in the world today, the shortage of health workers. Ethiopia 9 is centered on Gondar, capital of Begemder Province, near Lake Tana, in north-west Ethiopia. Its aims are a) to provide a center for training auxiliary personnel
b) to organize a model health center
c) to investigate local health conditions
d) to extend health services to the whole country.Â
Ethiopia 9 came into being in 1952., a joint activity of the Ethiopian Government, UNICEF, WHO and the U.S International Co-operation Administration.
The Haile Selassie Public Health College and Training Centre in Gondar graduates each year, some thirty (30) health assistants, thirty (30) public health nurses and thirty (30) sanitarians.
Food habits are part of the general health picture. In the early morning village street, a woman is cooking "injeras", which are pancakes made of millet and water, a typical Ethiopian food.
