Iraq - Refurbishment of the Emergency Management Centre in Erbil - 2018
Description
Erbil Management Centre (trauma hospital)
-
WHO has enabled the complete refurbishment of the Emergency Management Centre, an important trauma hospital in Erbil, Iraq.
The renovations and equipment upgrade began in November 2016, shortly after the military campaign began in Mosul in mid October. Staff were also provided with financial incentives of $650-$700 USD a month, since economic constraints in the region meant they were not being paid.
The hospital was equipped with a CT scan and its bed capacity increased from 42 to 110. The operating theatres, examining rooms and outpatient clinic were all updated and equipped.
The hospital played a vital role during the Mosul conflict. It the early days of the campaign it received 65 to 70 patients per day.
The hospital, which was established in 1997, is the leading trauma hospital in Iraq and takes cases from all over the country, as well as Syria. Surgeons from countries such as Japan and Sweden have come to be trained in the specialist trauma field of war surgery.
