Tonga volcanic eruption and tsunami, January 2022
Description
WHO’s Country Liaison Officer, Dr Yutaro Setoya, surveys the damage caused by the volcanic eruption and tsunami in the Kanokupulu area of Tonga’s main island of Tongatapu. The Hunga Tonga Hunga Ha’apai volcano erupted at approximately 5:30pm local time on 15 January, spewing forth an ash plume said to be almost 20km high. The World Health Organization (WHO) is closely coordinating with other United Nations agencies and partners to support the response to the recent volcanic eruption and tsunami in Tonga, including acting as a central channel of information in the face of continued telecommunications outages.
Note: During the time of the emergency, Tonga was COVID-free. People in the country had been advised to wear masks outside to protect their lungs from airborne ash.
